Oral surgery is a dental specialty that focuses on the correction of dental health problems through surgical means. At O.C. Dental Specialists, we usually try more conservative treatment methods before pursuing oral surgery. However, your dentist may recommend one of these procedures as a first line of treatment if your situation calls for it:
Dental implants: Dental implants are a permanent and non-removable method for replacing teeth lost to disease or trauma. Comfort, convenience, and improved oral health are just some of the benefits dental implants offer over dentures.
Tooth extraction: You may need one or more teeth extracted due to trauma to the mouth, a failed root canal, as part of an orthodontic treatment plan, or because of severe decay. Wisdom tooth extraction is also common. Although rare, some patients also need primary teeth extracted that never came out on their own.
Jaw surgery: This is always a last resort for our oral surgeons. You may require jaw surgery due to severe TMJ, improper jaw position or bite, trauma to the mouth, or severe teeth grinding. Extreme difficulty with chewing, eating, or speaking is also a possibility.
We understand that you may feel apprehensive about your upcoming oral surgery. Your dentist will let you know exactly what to expect before you schedule the appointment. If you think of a question later, don’t hesitate to contact us for clarification.
Sedation During Oral SurgeryAlthough we do our best to make you comfortable during your oral surgery, you may still feel highly anxious. If you feel this may interfere with your treatment, speak to our staff about our sedation during a dental procedure. You can take oral medication before your appointment, receive nitrous oxide, or a type of IV sedation. Our staff will explain each alternative to you so you understand exactly what to expect. Contrary to popular belief, none of these sedation options put you to sleep. They simply help you relax so you can receive the dental treatment you need.
